JOB OPENING: Program Director
THE ORGANIZATION:
The Food Literacy Project is the educational nonprofit partner to a local vegetable farm in Louisville, Kentucky. Founded in 2006, the Food Literacy project offers group experiential education programs on the farm, as well as ongoing entrepreneurial youth development programming for groups on the farm or in neighborhood gardens. Program participants (typically k-12, with occasional pre-K and adult groups) at the Food Literacy Project visit our working vegetable farm to learn about fresh healthy food and the soil where it grows while using all their senses to explore the farm. Our teaching staff and volunteers customize each program to meet the learning needs of groups that visit the farm.
RESPONSBILITIES:
Implement, plan, organize, manage and evaluate group experiential education programs on a working vegetable farm. Deliver direct service to youth, pre-k through adult, and instructional methods, as well as working in teaching garden and assisting with administrative/office tasks associated with managing a small nonprofit, including bookkeeping, organizing program calendar (booking programs), database work, and coordinating volunteers. Assist the director in fundraising, PR, and outreach efforts. Work can be physically demanding; will include some manual labor.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree preferred, or equivalent experience.
- Experience teaching or working with children; experience with diverse populations, especially at-risk youth.
- Be physically able to participate in and lead farm and garden work projects, and to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Self-motivated learner, organized, with excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Adaptability, creativity, and independence.
- Excellent attention to detail, and ability to maintain records, prepare reports, etc.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Comfortable supervising volunteers and orienting them to both teaching on the farm, and working in the garden.
- Experience using a computer and appropriate software (ie Microsoft word, email, Excel, etc).
- Experience with gardening or farming are valuable assets, as well as background in or interest in sustainable agriculture, community food security, cooking, and/or nutrition.
SALARY: $24,000 - $28,000 + modest health benefits
